Banan Jamal Abdulsalam Abu Al-Hija
How do you know your daughter? She's her uncle's daughter, she's tough and she'll get over it.’
This morning, I visited Damon Prison in the upper Carmel Mountains to meet with prisoner Banan Jamal Abdulsalam Abu Al-Hija (Rursas) (born 04.11.1985). After undergoing unusually harsh and humiliating procedures, I entered the lawyers' room where Banan was waiting for me.
Before we began our conversation, she told me that prisoners Shadid Darwish, Iman Shuamra, and Bushra Qawariq had not been visited by a lawyer since their arrest, and she asked me to convey messages of reassurance and greetings from prisoners Hanin Jaber, Fidaa Assaf, Dalal Halabi and her daughter Islam, Aya Aqel-Khatib and Shatila Abu Ayada to their families.
She began by telling me about her cellmates in Cell No. 3 (Shatila, Yasmin Shaban, Shahd Hassan and Ruba Dar Nasser) and the situation in the prison. There are 35 prisoners, three from inside Palestine, one from Gaza (Siham Abu Salem, in her seventies), Tasnim Odeh from Jerusalem, and the rest from the West Bank. Two prisoners are pregnant and two are suffering from cancer without any treatment.
The situation in Damon Prison is extremely bad. There is no canteen, no radio, the ‘ashnab’ (dormitory) is locked all day and only opened when food is distributed. Food is very scarce, as is soap for washing. They confiscated all our clothes. ‘They gave me baggy pyjama bottoms and a men's undershirt, and a women's robe.’ The 45-minute break includes a bathroom break (plastic curtains) and breakfast distribution. Study groups are prohibited, as are paper, pens, and books, all of which are now banned. Two copies of the Qur'an are allowed in each cell.
He told me the details of his arrest: "On the morning of Wednesday, 7 May 2025, I was in a seven-seater public car on my way to visit my mother in hospital. Suddenly, next to the Jibara checkpoint bridge, soldiers emerged from among the trees and attacked the car, pulling me out. They handcuffed me with plastic cuffs, blindfolded me with a bandage, pushed me aside, and I remained on the street until Thursday afternoon. They took me for interrogation, which included insults, curses, threats and intimidation. The insults about my martyred brother Hamza hurt me, and they took my mobile phone, which contained all the photos of my mother's life.
From there, they took me to the Hasharon detention centre, where I was subjected to a full strip search and brutal conditions. They kept me there from Thursday until Sunday, then took me to Damon to undergo another strip search.
I was transferred to the Salem interrogation centre, where I was shocked to learn of my mother's death, may God have mercy on her soul.
The treatment in Damon prison is extremely bad, with constant shouting, arbitrary punishments, complete isolation from the world and its news, sudden cell searches and raids, and the jailer walking around at night with a torch, ‘forcing us to sleep with our heads covered.’
She requested that touching letters be delivered to her family, one by one, mentioning in particular her four children (Touqa, Jana, Hamza, and Gana), her husband Abdullah, and Rasha, Sajida, Ghofran, and Fidaa, and anyone else who asks about her.
When we parted, she suddenly said: ‘For God's sake, tell my parents and brothers that I am very grateful. How do you know your daughter? She is fine, strong and resilient.’

زرت صباح اليوم سجن الدامون في أعالي الكرمل السليب لألتقي بالأسيرة بنان جمال عبد السلام أبو الهيجا (رُصرص) (مواليد 04.11.1985)، وبعد إجراءات تنكيليّة مُشدّدة، على غير العادة، دخلت غرفة المحامين وكانت بنان بانتظاري.
قبل أن نبدأ حديثنا أخبرتني أن الأسيرات شهد درواشة وإيمان شوامرة وبشرى قواريق لم يحظين بزيارة محام منذ لحظة الاعتقال، وطلبت إيصال رسائل طمأنة وسلامات من الأسيرات حنين جابر، فداء عساف، دلال الحلبي وابنتها إسلام، آية عقل-خطيب وشاتيلا أبو عيادة لأهاليهن.
حدّثتني بدايةً عن زميلات الزنزانة رقم 3 (شاتيلا، ياسمين شعبان، شهد حسن وربى دار ناصر)، ووضع السجن؛ 35 أسيرة، 3 أسيرات من الداخل الفلسطيني، أسيرة من غزة (سهام أبو سالم، سبعينيّة)، المقدسية تسنيم عودة والباقي أسيرات من الضفة الغربية، أسيرتان حوامل وأسيرتان تعانين من مرض السرطان دون أدنى علاج.
الوضع في سجن الدامون سيئ للغاية، فش كانتينا، وفش راديو، "الأشناب" مسكّر كل اليوم ويُفتح فقط لحظة توزيع الأكل، الأكل شحيح جداً، وكذلك الصابون للتنظيف. صادروا كلّ الملابس "أعطوني بنطلون بيجامة مُغّيط وفانيلا رجّالي، والجلباية من الصبايا"، الفورة 45 دقيقة تشمل حمّام (ستائر بلاستيكية) وتوزيع وجبة الفطور، ممنوع حلقات دراسة، لا أوراق ولا أقلام ولا كتب، كلّها باتت من الممنوعات، ويسمح بمصحفين في كلّ زنزانة.
حدّثتني بتفاصيل الاعتقال؛ "صبيحة الأربعاء 07.05.2025، كنت بسيارة عموميّة 7 ركّاب بطريقي لزيارة والدتي في المستشفى، فجأة، بجانب جسر حاجز جبارة، طلع الجنود من بين الشجر وهجموا على السيارة وانتشلوني منها، كلبشوني بكلبشات بلاستيكية، وأغمضوا عيوني بضمّادة، ودفشوني لجنب، وبقيت في الشارع حتى ظهر الخميس، واقتادوني لتحقيق صوري شمل مسبّات وشتائم وتهديد ووعيد، وآلمتني المسبّات على أخي الشهيد حمزة، وأخذوا الجوال "في كل صور حياة إمي".
ومنها إلى معتقل هشارون، تفتيش عارٍ بالكامل، ظروف وحشيّة، "وأبقوني هناك من الخميس حتى الأحد، واقتادوني إلى الدامون لأمرّ بطقوس التفتيش العاري ثانية".
نُقلت إلى تحقيق سالم، لتُصعق بخبر وفاة الوالدة، رحمها الله.
المعاملة في سجن الدامون سيئة للغاية، صياح كل الوقت، عقابات ع الطالع والنازل، عزل تام عن العالم وأخباره، تفتيش زنازين مفاجئ وقمعات، السجان بلِف بالليل مع كشّاف "مما يجبرنا على النوم مغطّيات روسنا".
طلبت إيصال رسائل مؤثّرة للعائلة، فرداً فرداً، وخصّت بالذكر أولادها الأربعة (تُقى، جنى، حمزة، وغنى) وزوجها عبد الله، ورشا وساجدة وغفران وفداء كلّ من يسأل عنها.
حين افترقنا قالت فجأة: "بالله عليكم، وصّلوا لأبوي وأخوتي، أنا كثير منيحة. بنتكم كيف بتعرفوها، ع قدّ حالها، شدّة وبتزول".
