IN THEIR OWN WORDS - NOTES FROM PRISON
Hassan Abadi
Haifa-based lawyer Hassan Abadi is one of few lawyers who represents Palestinian detainees in the apartheid state of Israel.
Here are a few of the messages he has brought with him to the outside world from the notorious Damon prison.
The Prison
The Damon prison is located near Haifa in northern Israel and is primarily used as a detention facility for Palestinian women from both the West Bank and Gaza who are “accused” of being security threats to the apartheid state.
The most recent information indicates that there are 87 Palestinian women currently imprisoned there: 54 from Gaza, 11 Palestinian citizens of Israel, 3 from Jerusalem, and 19 from the West Bank. The prison also detains Palestinian children.
Since October 2023, Damon Prison has faced significant overcrowding issues as part of Israel's broader incarceration crisis, with the entire prison system exceeding its legal capacity by about 60%.
